SNI = Severe Neurological Impairment

Severe Neurological Impairment (SNI) is a term used to describe a group of childhood conditions that affect how the brain and nervous system develop or function. Children with SNI have significant physical and intellectual disabilities and often have complex medical needs. Many children with SNI:

  • Need help with everyday activities such as moving, communicating, eating, or personal care.

  • See several healthcare providers and specialists.

  • May rely on medical equipment or assistive devices, such as feeding tubes, wheelchairs, or communication devices.

SNI-SE = SNI with Static Encephalopathy

A static encephalopathy is a permanent brain injury or condition that occurred early in life and does not progressively worsen, although a child's abilities and medical needs may change over time. Examples include:

  • Cerebral palsy resulting from an early brain injury

  • Brain injury related to lack of oxygen around the time of birth

  • Certain congenital (present at birth) brain abnormalities

Please note: Children with progressive neurological disorders, where the underlying disease continues to worsen over time, are not eligible for this study.
